Many of
you may have seen the new commercials to air during the Super Bowl &
American Idol in which Coca-Cola speaks to caloric content in their
products... Certainly, these recent
steps to fight obesity have not been presented without conflict. So, I suspect their pursuit will be met with
many challenges. All you have to do is
turn on @Morning_Joe and listen to Mika Brzezinski (@morningmika) to hear some
of the opposing views…
·
Is every calorie really equal?
·
Is it enough to say, don’t consume our beverages if
you’re not going to burn enough calories in a day?
·
Or is this really an attempt to get ahead of the
inevitable law suits to come?
All one
has to do is peruse the documentary section of Netflix to see the growing
number of studies focusing on the deceit of the food processing industry and
their many comparisons to that of the tobacco industry in the 50’s. Check out #HungryforChange, #FoodMatters,
#KilleratLarge, #Fresh, #FatHead.
My
suggestion… educate yourself & make
your own decisions! Certainly, I agree
with Cahillane’s statement that freedom of choice is a valued American ideal. Would I introduce Coca-Cola sodas to my 6 and
9 year olds? Nope. However, my family does drink Odwalla, Simply,
Smart Water, and Dasani. …and I myself, occasionally enjoy at Diet Coke! Everything
in moderationJ
But
even Brzezinski, author of #KnowingYourValue:Women,Money,andGettingWhatYou’reWorth
might not want to give up on Coca-Cola too quickly as she might be interested
to hear about some of the other initiatives @CocaColaCo is working on. Especially, the #5by20 program. In which Coca-Cola is working to empower 5 million
female entrepreneurs by 2020, through addressing many obstacles that women face
when trying to succeed in the marketplace.

Last,
but not least… we should absolutely take note of Coca-Cola’s partnership with
Dean Kamen (@Dean_Kamen) on the #slingshot.
Kamen, known best for his invention of the Segway, has worked with
Coca-Cola on a multimillion dollar science project over the last decade to
produce a portable, low-power
water purification system. As I
understand it, this machine can take water in any condition and convert to vaccination
grade drinking water. You see, lack of
safe drinking water is scarce in developing countries and Coca-Cola is tackling
this issue head on. I had no idea how scarce drinking water is,
until 2010 when my church, @12Stone partnered with #WorldHopeInternational to
build 100 wells in Mozambique. It’s a
real issue & you should read up… it’s important! Start here, http://www.aidforafrica.org/member-charities/world-hope-international/
In short… As an
Atlanta native, I’m proud to share that Coca-Cola now makes my list of companies I will pay close
attention to for their participation in corporate social responsibility!
